Our Predator of a President

While the wrath of wronged women has come down hard on the sexually inappropriate men of Hollywood these last few weeks, I can’t help but feel as though there is something we are forgetting. That’s right, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, still stands untouched for various sexual assault accusations, including two disturbing rape allegations. We have been holding film producers at a higher standard than the man running our country. Trump continues to dodge questions regarding his own scandals, while making comments on others like "I think it's a very special time, a lot of things are coming out and I think that's very good for our society and I think it's very, very good for women." If you can’t sense the irony yet, you’re about to.

Somehow, Donald Trump has managed to breeze through the election, and so far, his presidency, without any real consequences for his tasteless actions. His predatory behavior goes much deeper than a few offensive comments towards women, but let’s revisit them anyways. We know that Trump has reduced women to objects on several occasions. He has made “jokes” about incest with his daughter and statutory rape. He has referred to women as  dogs, pigs, gold diggers, fat, ugly, etc. We know that Trump thinks it’s acceptable to grab a woman by her pussy because "When you're a star, they let you do it." Donald Trump has made it very clear that he thinks he can get away with this type of behavior, and so far, he has.

As if blatant and unapologetic sexism wasn’t enough, let’s talk about the sexual harassment and rape cases made against the President. The timeline of Trump’s repulsive behavior, that we know of, begins in 1993, when his ex-wife, Ivana Trump tells a story of Trump violently raping her. I’d like to take a moment to remind you that, yes, you can be raped by someone you are married to. Nowhere in the vows of marriage does it state “you can forcibly use my body whenever you please.” During their marriage, Ivana signed a gag order, preventing her from talking about her marriage without Trump’s permission. This may have been a factor in why legal justice was never obtained. In 1997, Jill Harth filed a lawsuit against Trump for attempted rape. Strangely enough, it was retracted shortly after. However, Harth still stands by her story passionately. Today, there are more than a dozen women accusing Trump of sexual assault. All of these women have similar stories, and many of them have at least one corroborator. The accusers describe Trump forcibly kissing and grabbing their breasts, or sliding his hand under their skirts. Trump has responded by denying the allegations completely and calling the women liars.

In addition to the rape accusation made by his ex-wife, and the several accusations of sexual harassment, there is another incredibly disturbing rape accusation. A lawsuit was filed in 2016, stating that in 1994, the anonymous woman was the victim of a “savage sexual attack.” The woman was a 13-year-old girl at the time. The lawsuit was filed against Trump, and his close friend Jeffrey Epstein, a registered sex offender. The woman describes being tied to the bed, raped, and struck in the face. The case was said to be promising, as it included verifiable facts about Trump and Epstein, as well as a powerful witness statement. The witness confirmed that as Epstein’s party planner, she was in charge of getting under-age girls to attend his parties. She also made a statement that she did, in fact, witness both men sexually assaulting the victim. Coincidentally, the lawsuit was dropped just days before the election. Perhaps it was due to the several threats made against the anonymous woman by Trump’s loyal supporters.

In situations like this, when a powerful man is being accused by women, there is often skepticism. People ask questions like, “Why didn’t they come out sooner, why didn’t they call the police?” People may agree with Trump when he calls these women liars, desperate for their 15-minutes of fame. Remember, these women were humiliated, and then threatened to keep quiet. Imagine working up the courage to relive your most degrading moments in order to seek justice against one of the most powerful men in America, only to be belittled, mocked, and pushed to the side. These women are victims, and our society is taught to blame them. Take a close look at the facts, and take a close look at the President’s behavior. They are consistent with a sexual predator. A misogynistic, sexual predator made his way into the oval office. Let that sink in.
