Mariah Carey – Let’s Continue to Encourage Each Other on Our Journeys
When you think of Mariah Carey, the person behind all the fame and fortune, what comes to mind? A high-class diva? Confident superstar? Vocalist icon?
Here we were, unrealistically defining Carey as an undeniably perfect star. Yet, no one is perfect, not even celebrities. No matter how hard you strive for perfection, you will never achieve it. While we’ve always had our opinions and thoughts about who we think Mariah Carey is as a person, none of us could have realized the actual struggles the singer has been going through behind the curtain.
This past April, Carey went public with a PEOPLE cover story on her struggle with bipolar II disorder, a disorder leaving you with periods of depression as well as hypomania (less severe than mania associated with bipolar I disorder). She was first diagnosed with the disorder in 2001 following hospitalization for a physical and mental breakdown. She told PEOPLE, “[at first], I didn’t want to believe it.”
Carey kept her struggle a secret for years, afraid of what telling the world could do to her career. However, after being honest about her battle, she has received nothing but love and support from her devoted fans. Many fans even took to twitter to share their own struggles with bipolar disorder, showing just how grateful they were for her truthfulness in what would be a scary diagnosis for anyone:
“So happy to know such a huge weight has been lifted from your shoulders. So brave to open up about your mental illness. This will inspire and encourage so many others to do the same. Praying for your good health, you're my inspiration Mimi!“ one wrote. Another took to twitter saying “Well said Mariah. Very proud of you. My struggle is daily. Let’s break the stigma. Take care.”
Overwhelmed by support, Carey took to social media to say that she was thankful and inspired by all that has come from her sharing her journey. We can only imagine how hard it was for her to do this.
Carey being honest about her experiences with bipolar disorder has not only ignited a public conversation about mental health, but it has done so in the most public platform imaginable. As one of the biggest international stars, Carey and her story demonstrate that no amount of fame or money can change the simple fact that everyone is human. Everyone has their own worries and struggles that they must deal with on a daily basis; it is a part of life. Mariah Carey is a true inspiration for people out there with the same condition and her story shows that no one should isolate him or herself or be scared.
According to National Institute of Mental Health, bipolar disorder affects approximately 5.7 million American adults. It is not a rare condition. Let’s take this story and shed some light on mental health! After all, we need to break the stigma.
