The Queen’s Back In Town

The Queen | Bell Favakeh

This Queen’s back, feistier than ever, and has a hot new album to show for it! Nicki Minaj has been making headlines for various reasons: potential diss tracks, fights with fellow rapper Cardi B, Billboard Chart drama; our girl Nicki is all over the news. But her biggest moment yet? The Queen’s back and she’s here to stay on top.

The Queen’s back and she’s here to stay on top.

The elite rapper took the stage with an impressive performance at the 2018 MTV Music Video Awards. Completely in her element performing at the Oculus in NYC, Minaj was in the presence of unicorn statues, dancers clad in glittering gold, and a throne fit for a queen. Promoting her latest album Queen, Minaj showcased a dazzling compilation of the hottest tracks off the record, “Majesty,” “Barbie Dreams,” “Ganja Burn,” and “Fefe.”

Aside from the performance, she won her only nomination, Best Hip-Hop Video for “Chun-Li,” which was the first award presented during the telecast. Alongside her biggest contender, pop-savvy, vibrant Cardi B, Minaj is finding herself having to prove something with this album. In hopes of doing so, the rapper produced a record that has done some good things for her career. Her Queen campaign got off to a promising start in April when she released back-to-back singles “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun-Li.” “Chun-Li” gave Minaj her first solo Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in four years.

But the Queen herself has been finding herself having to defend, even prove her success. Feeling threatened, Minaj took to twitter argue against how Billboard calculated their sales figures and how Spotify disadvantaged her by under-promoting her:

“Spotify put Drake’s face on every playlist but told me they’d have to teach me a lesson for playing my music 10 mins early on #QueenRadio. Even tho they’ve been giving away my music for free for years & I am one of the top Spotify artists of all time.”

The star even went after rapper Travis Scott, claiming that Kylie Jenner and their baby Stormi is the sole reason for the recent success of his new album Astroworld:

“I put my blood sweat & tears in writing a dope album only for Travis Scott to have Kylie Jenner post a tour pass telling ppl to come see her & Stormi. lol. I'm actually laughing. #Queen broke the record of being number 1 in 86 countries. Thank Jesus & thank you to my fans.”

When Scott then gave his own performance at the VMAs, he started by proclaiming Astroworld as the number-one album in the country, which seemed to be a direct response to Minaj’s claims.

The truth: yes, Nicki Minaj is over the top, colorful with her language, and has a whole lot to say. But, the album is hot and her performance was killer. It’s unfortunate there has been so much controversy over this release but with these rappers, what’s a release without drama?
