Who is Merlin?

Merlin | Natashna Anderson

Most of us know Merlin as the magical old man from old stories and movies with the long beard and pointy hat. Let’s talk about what you might not know about Merlin. Did you know he was the son of the devil and he was supposed to be an evil monster?

Did you know he was the son of the devil and he was supposed to be an evil monster?

Some backstory. Until about a month ago all I knew about Merlin was that he was a magical old man who remembered the future and told Arthur to pull the sword from the stone. I was watching Looking For The Hobbit when they began to explain how Merlin, a force of good, was a huge inspiration for the character of Gandalf. They went on to explain how Merlin came to be. Merlin was the son of Satan. He was born of a woman who was impregnated by an incubus. When he was born he was meant to be an evil demon, but, because of his mother’s love, he became human.

Merlin was supposed to be pure evil, but because of the love that was shown to him, he became good and the most powerful wizard in folklore history.

Merlin was supposed to be pure evil, but because of the love that was shown to him, he became good and the most powerful wizard in folklore history. This made me think about humanity in general. So many old stories talk about how love can turn an evil heart, or without love one is powerless. In the past, I’ve written about the goddess Danu, and how her love is what gave her son power.

Merlin was considered to be so powerful because he used his immense power for good, even when fate itself had determined that he could only be evil. This all made me think if Merlin, the son of the devil, can be good, so can you and I. It’s a commentary on whether or not you think humans are good or evil at the core of it. When someone feels love, they want to do good.

To reach our fullest potential we need to be loved, we need to experience love, to show love.

Sometimes we don’t always feel like the amazing powerful wizards we are. To be honest, sometimes we feel like that ugly little monster who needs to be held and loved until it’s better. When I was little and would be in a “mood” or being difficult often times my mom would hug me and say “just gotta love it outta ya”. And that is what we need. To reach our fullest potential we need to be loved, we need to experience love, to show love.

Remind yourself on your monster days that you carry the potential to be the greatest, good wizard in the lore that is your life. Tell yourself that you are loved, and watch what happens.
